Chores & Rain

I can gladly say that I was productive yesterday. Since moving into a basement, one of our biggest issues has been keeping the insects out. When we moved in, the basement had tons of firewood stacked inside and a window open, allowing for all sorts of tiny creatures to move in and seek shelter. We quickly moved the firewood and stacked it neatly along a stone wall that's just outside of the basement door. Since then, we've learned that keeping wood so close to the house is a huge pest-control no-no, so yesterday I set out to move it... again.

This is just a little more than 1/3 of the total wood that needs moving. I seriously can't believe how much chopped wood is out there. I came across a few different spiders and bugs, but the highlight of my predicament was definitely unearthing this little guy.

When it gets rainy out, tiny little salamanders like this guy are all about trying to hide in the house. This is actually the biggest I've seen here, and he was only about 3 inches in length.

Bothered by my camera, he eventually retreated deeper into the wood pile to hopefully be discovered another day.

It started raining shortly after, and although it's been on and off since then, it seems most of the creatures that would normally penetrate our defenses in this weather have been staved off. That means I've been at least a little bit successful! If tomorrow is just as rainy as today, I'll be getting some work done indoors. More specifically, my brand new craft room! Huzzah!

I've moved!

That's right! It's been a little over two weeks, but Brad and I have finally managed to move into our newly finished basement bedroom in this beautiful, new-to-us farmhouse! It was a very time consuming makeover, but I've learned so much from this project that I can't wait to share!

During this time, I was struggling with the idea of moving my blog from Wordpress to Blogger. I was quite certain that I wanted to make the change, but I had so much going on and experienced some trouble in my attempt to import my blog. Moving while moving was just too much of a pain.

Well, today I'm nestled snugly in my pretty new bedroom (project photos to come) and I'm ready to make the change! At this time I still don't have my posts republished, but I realized while moving from house to house that sometimes it only takes just being there and putting in some time and effort to see results, and only then moving in one's belongings. I'm sure over time I'll have the more important posts uploaded, but I'll be excluding some that have been giving me some trouble. This shouldn't be an issue because they're no longer relevant anyway.

We even managed to bring with us our stubborn outdoor cat, Lefty. He was not enthused about his kidnapping, but he has adjusted well to being inside and especially to being groomed. We've been expecting some issues with his change in diet and habitat, but aside from some obnoxiously loud cat farts he's been no trouble at all! You'll be seeing him around here too!

So, like our ever-changing home improvement project, with this blog I am committing to a task that I will never truly complete, a continual work of art to be tweaked and hacked and remodeled and redecorated, and I will make it my own.

All in all, I'm happy to introduce the new Shubette Handmade blog. It's a place to learn, build, and grow my business, to make things that make me happy, to be pretty and unexpected, and to talk about what makes me tick. It's a place to share what I love, with a little cat door and a few rough drafts lying about. Wherever I may be, this is where you'll find me. Thanks for coming!
